NAF headquarters receives NOUN centre's facility request

The headquarters of the Nigerian Air Force, Abuja has said it is in receipt of the facility request for the National Open University of Nigeria's Special Study Centre for the Nigerian Air Force Base, Kaduna.

In an address delivered during a one-day working visit by the Chief of Staff, Air Training Command, Kaduna, Air Vice-Marshall P. O. Oahimire, he suggested that the university management should now give the already-tabled demands more weights.  

Oahimire, accompanied by Group Captain U. L. Musa, Command Education Officer to the Special Study Centre for the Nigerian Air Force Kaduna, pointed out that a comprehensive letter should be communicated by NOUN headquarters for similar request so as to give it more bite.

He further said details of all the university correspondences should be attached, which include those relating to plan for the office building, store and specification for the 500- capacity computer-based test examination Hall.

He lauded the role and contributions the university is making in the development of human capacity of the armed forces and the nation at large.

"This was a clear evidence of my tour of educational formation under the Nigerian Air Force in Kaduna.

"I was glad to know that many of our officers are students of this great institution," he said.

Earlier in his welcome address, the director of the centre, Prof. Nda Mundi, expressed his profound gratitude to the authority of the Nigerian Air Force for their support towards upliftment and the growth of the centre.

He further gave a brief history of the university where he elucidated that the university cut across all the states of the federation, including some local government areas, where some community study centres are situated.

The special Study Centre for the Nigerian Air Force Kaduna was established in 2008 at the Ground Training Command, GTC premises, however, the centre was later relocated to its permanent site in 2018, said Mundi.

Moreover, he explained that NOUN has three different study centres in which it operates under: main study centre situated within the state capital of each state, special study centres, which are usually for the Armed Forces and Paramilitary formation in the country.

He highlighted that the main study centres were fully funded by the university while the  special study centres and the community study centres are the responsibilities of the their host to cater for mega percentage of their needs.

In addition, the centre director emphasised that the Special Study Centre for the Nigerian Air Force was established mainly for the officers and Men and the families of the Air Force.

Over three hundred personnel of the Nigerian Air Force had graduated from the the centre from a growing population of about two thousand students.

However, due to the increasing number both staff and students, the centre is in dire need of Computer-Based Test CBT examination Hall of five hundred capacity store and a dedicated access road, the director emphasised.

Highlights of the activities at the centre during the visit were facilities inspection of the directors office, examination hall, temporary zinc house originally erected as a store but converted to make shift office for the junior staff.
