Proffer solutions to cybersecurity challenges in Nigeria, VC urges NCS

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, has enjoined the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) to think of various ways of finding lasting solutions to challenges of cybersecurity in the country.

Peters, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Academics, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma, stated this at the 2nd stakeholders' forum on cybersecurity organized by the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS).

With the theme: "Addressing Nigeria's Cybersecurity Challenges," the meeting was held on Tuesday at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) headquarters, Jabi, Abuja.

While declaring the event open, the NOUN VC said a globalised village is driven by information and communication technology (ICT), adding that there is an alarming rate of cybercrimes in the society and urged the society to urgently address the ugly trend in Nigeria.

He thanked the society for organising the event, and wished the stakeholders a successful lectures and deliberations.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the NCS president, Prof. Adesina Sodiya, said the forum will allow the society to "conduct an independent assessment of the state of cybersecurity in Nigeria," with a view to proffering solutions to the challenges.

The four-day event attracted participants from various agencies and parastatals such as banks, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), NITDA, among others.

The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) is an umbrella organization of all information technology professionals, interest groups and stakeholders in Nigeria.

Formed in 1978 as Computer Association of Nigeria (COAN) and transformed into NCS in 2002 as a result of harmonization with other stakeholders and interest groups, the society is the national platform for the advancement of information technology science and practice in Nigeria.
