The World Bank-assisted Africa Centre of Excellence on Technology Enhanced Learning (ACETEL), has commenced its 3rd professional short course training, which is being held virtually at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

A total of 783 have enrolled at no cost for the 8-week training, which focuses on capacity building geared towards the development of digital experts.

The Vice-Chancellor, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Olufemi Peters, represented by the DVC Technology, Innovation and Research, Prof. Monioluwa Olaniyi, said the university is excited to have ACETEL living up to its challenge.

Director of the centre, Prof. Grace E. Jokthan in her opening speech, said the workshop will centre on two professional courses: CISCO Certified Network Associate 1 (CCNA1) and Programming Essentials in Python.

She said ACETEL decided to offer the training on the two courses because they form the bedrock of skills that are required to enhance digital literacy and development of solutions needed for the 21st Century education.

According to Jokthan, Python is an object-oriented, high-level programming language that is well-suited to career-changers seeking an entry-level programming role as well as established technology professionals seeking to upgrade their understanding of Python.

She added that the CISCO-facilitated CCNA certification offers professional and in-depth understanding of networking concepts, and also validates the holders’ general ability to install, secure, operate and troubleshoot issues within enterprise networks, thus providing the opportunity for career advancement and new job opportunities with higher salary packages.

‘‘The training programmes offer you a unique blend of self-study resources and instructor led training, aimed at providing the support needed to acquire requisite skills that will transform the education landscape,’’ the director said.

The centre director further encouraged all participants to visit ACETEL CISCO academy situated at Wuse Study Centre for a physical hands-on support as she informed them that certificates will be issued to students who successfully complete the workshop.

On his part, the director, Learning Content Management System, Dr. Adewale Adesina, who is also the short course coordinator, informed the trainees on the benefits of ACETEL/CISCO Networking Academy and the key task required.

According to him, the total number of enrolled participants for CCNA1 stands at 477 and 306 for Programming Essentials in Python.

He said ‘‘It is worthy of note that we have representations from all over the states in the country and also international participants. ACETEL organises sub-regional trainings that reach beyond the shores of this country; it is not just an academy that is situated in one location.’’
