Following a nationwide rollout of the newly-introduced course: DES 303 Community Development, the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), has activated a remarkable wave of student-led engagements with communities.
In furtherance of the development, Fugar Study Centre, Edo State, made a bold and impactful statement on Thursday, May 8, 2025, as the management of the centre took 300-Level students of the institution to Fugar Mixed Secondary School, Fugar, to engage over 700 students on a sensitisation campaign against sexual-harassment.
The event began with a welcome address by the Principal of the junior section of the College, Mrs. E.I. Etu, who also accorded the NOUN delegation a warm reception.
Etu commended the management of NOUN, as well as the national leadership of the university for initiating such a purposeful and far-reaching academic exercise.

She observed that the initiative did not only address immediate educational and health needs but has also reinforced NOUN’s broader commitment to societal development.
Aligned with the objective of DES 303 to connect classroom theory with real world practice, the outreach featured structured engagements centered on adolescent health and self-awareness.
Everyone of the over 700 students, drawn from the junior and senior sections of the college, was presented with a gift package containing sanitary pads for female students and notebooks with pens to their male counterparts.
The high point of the event was a keynote address by the Acting Centre Director, Fugar Study Centre, Mr. Kingsley Arogunyo Ojo.
Ojo observed that DES 303 as a course is a potent tool to equip students to become agents of change and underscored the uniqueness of NOUN’s educational model.
“NOUN may not be a conventional university in structure; it, however, is one of the most effective institutions in Nigeria and beyond.
"Our approach demands independent thinking, discipline, and deep understanding. These qualities constitute what shapes our students into leaders of change,” he added.

Dignitaries who graced the occasion and offered goodwill messages, applauding NOUN’s continued innovative strides and community-driven mission included
Mr. Dada Saye Micheal, Edo State Directorate of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Etsako Central Local Government Area; Engr. J.I.
