As a consequence of the numerous benefits inherent in study assessment, the Dean of the Faculty of Education, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Uchenna S. A. Osuji, has called on teachers at all levels of education to properly assess their students.

Osuji stated this on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 while presenting the 20th Inaugural Lecture series of the university at its headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking on the topicAssessment for the Learning to Learn and Life-Long Learning Societies,” he said in the business of learning, it is imperative to assess the ability of learners and that everyone invested in teaching at every level of education and even outside of education should have a basic knowledge of educational assessment to fit in well.

The professor of Measurement and Evaluation, Department of Educational Foundations, also pushed for a more robust and reliable assessment system, stating that if the assessment system is flawed and substandard, "we will be producing students with poor academic achievements at all levels of education."

According to him, the resultant effect “will ultimately spell doom for the society and will be bad to our collective existence and development.

The lecturer said assessment starts with goal setting for students' learning and that these goals are articulated and implemented at the programme and course levels.

On his part, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufeni Peters, congratulated the presenter of the university’s 20th Inaugural Lecture, stressing that NOUN had a comprehensive and reliable grading and assessment system.
