The Director of the Kaduna Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Andrew Agbon, has commended students for initiating community development projects that address practical needs within the centre and extend support to vulnerable members of society.
Agbon gave the commendation during the commissioning of a 64-capacity storage locker constructed by Group B as part of its DES 303 Community Development Project in Kaduna.
The locker is designed to provide students with a secure place to keep their belongings and valuables, helping to address cases of missing items at the centre.
The Director praised the students for their foresight and commitment, noting that the project demonstrated how students could apply their knowledge to solve practical problems within their immediate environment.
He described the initiative as an expression of corporate social responsibility, which promotes cooperation, accountability and a sense of responsibility at individual, family and group levels.
Agbon added that such projects encourage students to become more conscious of the needs of their communities and the organisations with which they interact.
He expressed confidence that the initiative would inspire other students to contribute to the development of the centre and society at large, while upholding the values of integrity, service and responsibility.
Speaking on behalf of the students, their representative said the project had provided valuable lessons in teamwork, cooperation and community service.
He expressed the hope that the students would replicate the gesture in the wider society after completing their studies.
He also expressed appreciation to the management of NOUN for providing opportunities for learning and personal development, while commending his colleagues for their commitment to ensuring the successful completion of the project.
The event was attended by the Centre’s Head of Administration, Hajiya Fatima Yakubu, and other senior members of staff.
In a related development, another group of students carried out a humanitarian outreach to Sabon Gari Orphanage Home through the Kaduna State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
The group donated essential items, including soap, children's clothing and other supplies, as part of its community development initiative, demonstrating the students’ commitment to supporting vulnerable members of society.
