The maiden PhD seminar presentation of the Department of Mass Communication, Faculty of Social Sciences, has taken place at the Board Room of the department, where eight candidates faced the panel of professors to defend their proposals.

The 4-day event, which started on 25th – 28th August, 2021, formally signaled the commencement of the PhD degree in the department, which already offers MSc in Mass Communication, PGD as well as undergraduate degree programmes.

Head of the Department, Dr. Lateef Adekunle Adelakun, who expressed his happiness with the commencement of the PhD programme under his reigns, said Mass Communication has now been the pace-setter in the faculty.

In an interview with the NOUN News, he said with eight PhD candidates, which is the largest so far in the PhD history of the university, Mass Communication department has laid a solid PhD foundation in the faculty.

The dean of the faculty, Dr. Moses Etila Shaibu, said NOUN, after recording the first PhD graduate in Christian Theology, the senate had just approved three more in the English Department and hoped that Mass Communication will soon be the next to produce the highest PhD graduates thus far in the university.

On his part, the outgoing dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Sama’ila Mande, said it has been part of his conviction since taking over as the dean that no programme would be offered without legitimacy.

“No programme would be run without approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC), that is without legitimacy,” he said.

Mande, who said the programme was going to be his last as the dean, having been appointed as the Director, CHRD, Kaduna, added that Mass Communication department is starting PhD programme on a sound footing, with solidified, competent scholars in the field of communication.

A professor of Marketing Communication, Mande, alongside Prof. Eserinune Mojaye, Associate Professor Chidinma Onwubere, Dr. Chuks O. Enwerem and Dr. Adelakun were present at the seminar presentation.
