
Staff and students delegates of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) have participated at the 12th All Nigeria Universities Debating Championship, which took place at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State.
The Director of Counselling and Career Development, Dr. Sefinat Omuya, who was present at the event, said a total of twenty-eight universities participated in the contest.
“The competition was structured into three core segments, which are: Debate, Quiz and Public Speaking. NOUN delegates were drawn from Port Harcourt, Ikorodu, Abeokuta, IIorin, Emevor, Iwo and Fugar Study Centres,” she said.
Omuya added that for NOUN, there would be an early preparation for the next edition, which is goi ng to be the 13th, scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt in 2026.
The director advised that engagement of expert coaches from professional fields should train NOUN delegates on debates, public speaking and Quiz strategy, adding that establishment of Quiz Clubs would enhance student and staff performance at such competition.
Omuya further recommended an intra-university competitions based on geo-political zones, saying that this can further evolve into intra-state competitions with other universities.
“The positive feedback from the students has been overwhelming. They are of the opinion that the experience will significantly enhance their academic, social and intellectual capabilities.
“The students have shown determination to return better prepared for the next edition, whose hosting right has been won by River State University, Port Harcourt,” she said.
She expressed her gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, for his continuous support and granting the students the opportunity to represent the university on a national scene.
Certificates of participation were issued to all participants at the end of the competition.
