The Vice-Chancellor, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Prof. Olufemi Peters, has visited the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, at Force Headquarters, Abuja, in a move aimed at deepening collaboration between the university and the Nigeria Police Force.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was joined by other top management officers, expressed appreciation to the Police for their unwavering support to NOUN, particularly in the establishment of the Special Police Study Centre in Dei-Dei, Abuja.

Prof. Peters reiterated NOUN’s mandate of widening access to higher education for Nigerians regardless of profession, location, or schedule, noting that the establishment of the Police Special Study Centre was a testament to the university’s commitment to making education available to all.

He commended the IGP and the Force leadership for their support in bringing this vision to life.

The VC, however, highlighted the pressing challenges confronting the Police Study Centre in Dei-Dei, saying that the centre has witnessed a significant surge in student enrollment, including a large number of police officers, yet its facilities have remained grossly inadequate.

“The student population has outgrown the centre’s capacity. The classrooms are too small, the seating insufficient, and staff offices are not enough, leaving many to share tight, inconvenient spaces.

The library is housed in an improvised steel container rather than a proper facility. Access roads are in deplorable condition, and electricity supply is erratic. All these issues affect both staff and students alike,” he stated.

Responding, IGP Egbetokun thanked the NOUN delegation for the visit and assured that the concerns raised had been duly noted.

He disclosed that plans were already in motion to address several of the challenges, particularly around infrastructure and logistics, to ensure that the Police Study Centre can adequately serve its expanding population.

The IGP further commended NOUN for its role in broadening educational opportunities for members of the Force, noting that continuous education was critical for professional and personal development within the service.
