The Olusegun Obasanjo Centre for African Studies (OOCAS) of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN),  has witnessed the formal handover of the reins of leadership by the outgoing director, Prof. Eserinune Mojaye to incoming one, Prof. Wilfred Ugwuanyi in a ceremony held on Monday, January 20, 2025 at the NOUN headquarters in Abuja.

The event marked not just a change in leadership, but also a reflection on the centre's achievements and a look towards its future ambitions.

Mojaye, in a farewell address, reflected on his tenure and the milestones achieved under his leadership and highlighted the centre's successes within this time period.

His achievements, according to him, included forming research teams, journals and publications that are in the process of production, successful conferences, expanded student programmes, reaching out to local, regional and international bodies for collaborations, webinars and annual lecture, which is still in the pipeline.

The outgoing director also expressed gratitude to the staff, faculty, and partners who contributed to these achievements, emphasising that the success of OOCAS is a collective effort.

On his part, Prof. Ugwuanyi , in his acceptance speech, expressed gratitude for the trust placed on him and outlined his vision for the future of the centre.

“My goal is to build on the foundation laid by my predecessor and to take OOCAS to greater heights. This centre is a place of knowledge and a platform for critical engagement with African issues. Together, we will continue to push boundaries and make meaningful contributions to the continent and beyond,” he stated.

He also outlined his vision for the future of OOCAS, promising to focus on research areas, enhancing partnerships with African universities, developing new programmes and continuing to enhance the old ones.

The newdirector assured that  the transition will be a smooth one, as he builds on a strong foundation while embracing new opportunities for growth and collaboration.

OOCAS, named after the former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, has established itself as a leading centre dedicated to fostering research, education, and dialogue on diverse aspects of African life, history, and politics.
