The management of Port Harcourt Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), River State, on Monday took its advocacy drive to the headquarters of Zone C of the Nigerian Customs Services, Wharf Road, Port Harcourt.
Leading the NOUN delegation on the advocacy visit, the new centre director of Port Harcourt Study Centre, Dr. Nnenna Nancy Chukwuma, who, penultimate week, had announced, during the handover ceremony, intensive advocacy as one of the cardinal thrusts of her administration, presented to the Assistant Comptroller and his men the programmes of NOUN and the suitability of the flexible nature of the programmes to personnel of the Nigerian Customs Services.
Chukwuma urged the Customs officials to take advantage of the flexibility and cost effectiveness of the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode of instructional delivery, promoted by the National Open University of Nigeria, to improve themselves and update their academic qualifications.
Responding, Mr. K. A. Olushemire, the Assistant Comptroller, Zone C, Rivers State, expressed gratitude on behalf of his officers and men on the visit of Chukwuma and members of her entourage.
Olushemire promised to work in partnership with the university to encourage his officers and men to enrol at the university for programmes of their choice. He said such enrolment would afford the Customs personnel an “opportunity to expand their knowledge, as knowledge is power.”
The Customs chief also pledged to make the issue of enrolment at NOUN, item number two on the agenda of their next meeting.
Accompanying the centre director on the advocacy visit were Mr. Felix Chegwe, Principal Accountant, and Mr. Madu Anthony Odeigah, Administrative Officer 1.
