The Director, Wuse II Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria  (NOUN), Prof. Grace C. Okoli, has admonished the newly admitted students to be of exemplary character and cautioned them against acts that could tarnish the good image of the university.

Okoli stated this during the orientation excise to welcome the newly admitted students of the institution on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 via the zoom platform.

The director, while conveying the message to the freshmen,  said that NOUN is an Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institution, which was established in 1988,with the mandate to deliver university education to all Nigerians who are willing to acquire knowledge no matter who they are at an affordable cost.

She disclosed that while NOUN is an ODL institution, it does not offer the face-to face system of learning unlike the conventional system that they are familiar with, and barriers like age, distance, finance, religion and gender do not hinder those who are interested in becoming NOUN students.

Okoli enumerated various ways such as self-learning method, where course materials are given to students which sets the foundation for their self-learning and make learning simple and straight forward and also the online facilitation, which is by zoom.

She advised them to work hard and strive for perfection, and organise their study time, urging them not to wait for examinations schedule before rushing to get started.

On her part, the Head, NOUN-ACTU Unit, Nzenwa Doris C.L, while addressing the students of the centre, emphasised the role of the unit as a front-line crusader against every form of unethical principles in the university, resulting from a free environment which will be driven by highly sensitised, intelligent and efficient staff for optimal performance.

She said the mission of the unit was also to build a positive-minded work force by creating and promoting internal awareness that will forester integrity, objectivity, probity and transparency were corrupt practices will be reduced to the minimal level in the university.

Doris said that as students, the university expect that they conduct themselves properly, and as good students they have the student handbook to guild their stay in NOUN, adding that they should endeavor to listen to warnings given to them and strictly work within the limit of what they are asked to do.

The event was well coordinated and aligned with the orientation programmes of the centre, as desk officers, counseling unit, ICT department all made separate remarks, enlightening the students on the operation of the university.
