The Director of the Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Professor Ganiyat A. Adesina-Uthman, has conducted a two-day monitoring exercise of students undergoing industrial attachment at various establishments across Rivers State.
The monitoring exercise, held on Monday, July 6 and Tuesday, July 7, 2026, commenced with Prof. Adesina-Uthman's arrival at the Port Harcourt Study Centre, where she was received by the centre's management before proceeding to organisations hosting NOUN students participating in the Batch 1, First Semester 2026 SIWES programme.
During the visits, the SIWES Director assessed the students' performance, interacted with industry-based supervisors, and evaluated compliance with the objectives of the industrial training programme aimed at equipping students with practical workplace experience.
Among the institutions visited were the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Port Harcourt, and other approved SIWES placement organisations across the state.
Prof. Adesina-Uthman also held interactive sessions with Development Studies students on internship at the University of Port Harcourt, as well as students of Computer Science, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and Mass Communication serving in various organisations.
The exercise also provided an opportunity to engage students who were absent from their places of attachment during the monitoring visit, those who had completed their industrial training, representatives of inmate-students of Criminology and Security Studies at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, and the SIWES Desk Officer at the Port Harcourt Study Centre.
Prof. Adesina-Uthman commended the Centre Director, Dr. Theresa Ettu, and members of staff of the Port Harcourt Study Centre for their dedication and support throughout the monitoring exercise.
She particularly acknowledged the contributions of the Deputy Director, Counselling Services, Mrs. Makbere; the Principal Assistant Registrar and SIWES Desk Officer, Mrs. Mary Arit Bassey; the Students' Counsellor, Mr. Bright Iwu; and Administrative Officer I, Mrs. Romoke Joshua Igwe-Azuoma, for their commitment to the successful conduct of the exercise.
"We all closed late. I appreciate you all for that great commitment and dedication to work," Prof. Adesina-Uthman said.
