As students of the Makurdi Study Centre, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN),  prepare to engage in their mandatory Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), and the coordinators of the scheme, in collaborations with the university, have held an orientation exercise for the students.

The exercise, which took place at the centre in Makurdi, Benue State, was organised to enlighten them on the importance of the scheme as a critical tool in transferring knowledge.

SIWES coordinator in Makurdi, Mannaseh Agaku Mguemo, explained that the scheme is a training where students in relevant fields are exposed to the actual work and practical application of the theoretical aspect.

She stated that the scheme exposes students to real work experience during the course of their studies as such major objectives are acquiring skills to fit-in to work place after graduation, and to expose students to work method, among others.

The coordinator called on the students not to expect too much during their training, even as she advised them to be punctual, obey laid-down rules and regulation and also protect companies’ equipment.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Study Centre Director, Prof. Fidel Okopi, enjoined the students to always comfort themselves in an orderly manner, bearing in mind that they would be closely monitored.

Okopi charged them to take the event seriously and should endeavour to ask important questions about any part of the SIWES process that they did not understand to ensure clarity of purpose going into the scheme.

He, however, urged them to find placements that are relevant to their courses of study and to conduct themselves in an orderly manner as ambassadors of the university.
