The Centre Director, Africa Centre of Excellence on Technology Enhanced Learning (ACETEL), Prof. Grace E. Jokthan has said the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) was privileged to have a renowned scientist and an inventor as its new Vice-Chancellor.

Jokthan stated this on Tuesday while briefing newsmen on the activities geared towards ACETEL’s first orientation ceremony, billed to hold virtually next week.

The director added that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, is renowned for his invention of Diatomaceous Earth (DE), non-toxic grain-protectant, trademarked NSPRIDUST®, which can protect stored agricultural grains for 16 months.

She maintained that as a former Executive Director of Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI), Prof. Peters will no doubt be deploying his wealth of experience to bear in the discharge and management of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) in Nigeria.

"The VC is also one who is familiar with what ODL is, having served as the first DVC Academic of the university; first Dean of School of Sciences (now Faculty of Sciences); Director Academic Planning etc. Prof. Peters will no doubt understand with ease the foundation and focus of ACETEL.

"Already, he has pledged the university management’s desire to render any support necessary for the realization of ACETEL objectives of deploying digital tools and solutions for the advancement of education, which, according to him, is a similar mandate to NOUN," the director explained.

Jokthan then congratulated the new Vice-Chancellor and wished him an eventful outing as the new helmsman of the biggest open and distance learning university in Africa.
