Members of the committee on tertiary education of the House of Representatives, on Thursday, 19th August 2021, have paid a visit to the headquarters of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) as part of their series of oversight function in the North-central region.

The 11-member committee, which was led by its chairman, Hon. Aminu Sulaiman, was received by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, alongside his management team, who welcomed them to the university and expressed their readiness cooperate with the legislators in their assignment.

Hon. Sulaiman said the committee was at the university for its statutory function of oversight to the agencies under its supervision, which it started in January, 2021 on a zonal basis.

He said the essence of the exercise was to create a robust engagement between the two parties such that the operation of the university and the infrastructure development are in tandem with the financial provisions contained in the Appropriation Act.

The committee chairman, who said the visit was the first by the lawmakers since the assumption of office by the present Vice-Chancellor, explained that oversight visits normally create a platform that will benefit the system and make it batter on behalf of Nigerians.

While welcoming the members of the Green Chamber to the university earlier, Prof. Peters expressed his happiness for hosting the committee and described NOUN as a friendly institution to all.

He said while summerising the 3-year report submitted to the committee that the university was established to massify the attainment of tertiary education, which it continues to do through the various study centres spread across the states of the country.
