ACETEL secures right to host FG's IDICE Project

The Africa Centre of Excellence on Technology Enhanced Learning (ACETEL) in partnership with the Directorate of Entrepreneurship and General Studies (DE&GS) of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), have received a team from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Bank of Industry (BOI) on an evaluation process.

This visit came following the selection of ACETEL as one of the participating universities to host the Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (IDICE) Project.

IDICE is an initiative of the Federal Government of Nigeria aimed at promoting investment in digital and creative industries, which will facilitate the creation of more sustainable jobs for the Nigerian youth population.

ACETEL Director, Prof. Grace Jokthan delivered a presentation on Centre of Excellence in Digital Technology Entrepreneurship and Literacy (CEDTEL), stating that the goal of the IDICE project is to Provide digital literacy, entrepreneurial skills, and startup incubation.

While noting that CEDTEL aligns with the IDICE programme, she highlighted the National Open University of Nigeria’s readiness to flag off the project.

The director stated the availability of its modern Infrastructure such as the ICT facilities, digital libraries, virtual labs, multimedia facilitation rooms as well as 7 incubation centres in Lagos, Kano, Uyo, Enugu, Maiduguri, Bogoro and Abuja,

She also stated the availability of ACETEL’s specialised labs in AI, Cybersecurity, Virtual Reality, CISCO Academy, 4 undergraduate & 6 postgraduate accredited programmes that are ICT-based and Edu Tech Programmes and 14 short courses addressing digital skills gaps in Africa.

The NUC and BOI team representatives, Mr. Babatunde Omoloye and Mr. Ife Adebayo, along with other members of the team, while responding to Prof. Jokthan’s presentation, asked questions to ascertain the centre’s readiness to host the project.

The team took a tour of the Centre’s laboratories which are the Artificial Intelligence Lab, CyberSecurity Lab, Management Information System Lab, Basic Lab, Multimedia Lab, Virtual Reality Lab and the Cisco Academy and other facilities put in place in readiness to flag off the project.

ACETEL was granted the opportunity to host the IDICE project after a thorough inspection of its facilities.

The decision came after the evaluation process that assessed ACETEL’s infrastructure, technological capacity, and readiness to support the initiative. 

The IDICE team expressed confidence in ACETEL’s ability to effectively manage the project, citing the centre’s commitment to excellence in technology-enhanced learning.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor Technology Innovation and Research (TIR), Prof. Godwin Akper, University Librarian, Dr. Okpala Angela Ebele; Director, DE&GS, Dr. Sam Awolumate, Ag. Director, Learning Content Management System (DLCMS), Dr. Lukman Bello were present at the meeting with the IDICE team.
