The Director, Special Study Centre for the Nigerian Navy, Dr. Ofe Inua, has led an advocacy team of the centre to three local government councils of Lagos State as part of the study centre’s routine advocacy campaigns.

Inua, who led her team to Mainland, Surulere and Amuwo Odofin Local Government Areas of the state, disclosed that the purpose of these visits was to sensitise the leadership of the three councils on the programmes and operations of the National Open University of Nigerian (NOUN).

She met the helmsmen of the three councils: Hon. Omolara Essien, chairperson, Mainland Local Government Area, Hon. Tajudeen Ajide, Chairman, Surulere Local Government Area, and Hon. (Engr) Oluwaseyi Valentine Buraimoh, Chairman, Amuwo Adofin Local Government Area at their respective offices.

In separate discussions, the centre director enumerated various programmes of the Nigeria's premier Open and Distance Learning (ODL) university, which could be of immense benefit to staff and people of those local government areas.

Part of the vision of the university, the director emphasised, was to ensure that a study centre is established in each of the local government areas of Lagos State to make true the mission of bringing quality university education to the doorstep of every Nigerian.

Responding, Essien commended the director for taking out time to enlighten her constituency on the programmes and operation of the university, promising to encourage staff of Mainland Local Government to take advantage of what NOUN offers to update their academic qualifications.

Ajide, on his part, expressed delight at Inua's presentation, while applauding NOUN as a 21st Century university that harnesses an array of modern technologies to deliver quality educational programmes to Nigerians.

The chairman voiced his commitment to encouraging staff and people of Surulere Local Government Area to seize the opportunity provided by NOUN to enroll as students.

Buraimoh, who described education as a veritable tool for self-improvement, also acknowledged that the flexibility and cost effectiveness of NOUN programmes afford Nigerians what it takes for them to fulfill their academic dreams.

"I'm well aware of NOUN's pedigree and I'm very grateful to the NOUN team for this visit. It's very important to us that you came here to make sure that the people of my local government area gain access to an array of your institution’s quality programmes," he said.

The advocacy team comprised of Mrs. Irene Idahosa (SAR), Mrs. Ifeyinwa Eke (DEA), Mr. Samson Ganvo (AO1) and Christiana Odiniya (SEO).
