The Management of Awka Study Centre, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), has taken the gospel of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode of instructional delivery to the State Secretariat, Awka, Anambra State.
Acting director of the centre, Dr. Bibian Ugoala, who was accompanied by the centre's staff, said the advocacy was a deliberate effort to increase the students’ population at the centre through the state civil service.
While sensitising them about the operations and activities of the university leveraging technology, Ugoala said that NOUN is a full-fledged federal institution, where all its academic programmes have been accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
She added that the curriculum contents of academic programmes are majorly tailored towards skills acquisition and development.
According to Ugoala, students who are studying with NOUN stand to enjoy the benefits of flexibility, affordability and cost-effectiveness, stressing that Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA) was purposefully designed to help students towards preparing for their exams and this they do at the comfort of their homes.
The director emphasised that the university management has magnanimously provided for both hard and soft course material copies which the students can seamlessly use to promote their academic pursuits.
"One of the beauties of studying at NOUN is the absence of strikes and students are set to graduate within the duration of their academic programmes,” she said.
Ugoala stated that knowledge is power and notwithstanding their levels at the office, there is still room for academic improvement.
She encouraged them to embrace the ODL mode of education where they can be working and at the same time learning.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma Udeh, in her response, expressed gratitude about the centre's visit and promised to encourage her staff on the need to enrol at the centre.
