Dr. Akeem Babatunde Disu has assumed duty as the new Director of the Special Study Centre for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Kaduna, following the recent redeployment of staff by the Management of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
Dr. Disu took over from Mrs. Abimbola Esther Frank, having previously served as Director of the NOUN Benin Study Centre.
Speaking on his plans for the centre, Disu stressed the need for stronger collaboration among the centre, NOUN Management and the Nigerian Air Force to address identified gaps and improve the centre’s operations and facilities.
He said his administration would align with the vision of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma, to take the university to greater heights by implementing strategies aimed at increasing enrolment, improving student retention and strengthening service delivery.
According to him, the centre will embark on an aggressive advocacy and sensitisation campaign through various channels, including radio jingles and advertisements, roadshows, distribution of flyers, as well as visits to organisations, schools and other locations where prospective students could be reached.
He added that the centre would strengthen its collaboration with Nigerian Air Force officials, particularly in the areas of advocacy and student support, while ensuring the delivery of quality services to learners.
Disu noted that, as a Special Study Centre serving a paramilitary institution with a unique mandate, the centre would deepen the existing relationship between NOUN and the Nigerian Air Force to promote increased enrolment and improve students’ academic performance and retention.
On enrolment and community awareness as key indicators of study centre performance, he said efforts would be intensified to educate both Nigerian Air Force personnel and members of the surrounding civilian community on the academic opportunities and benefits available through NOUN.
Dr. Disu appealed to students and staff, as well as the Nigerian Air Force, which hosts the centre, to support his administration in achieving its objectives.
He urged students to remain committed to their studies, participate regularly in online classes and promptly report challenges to centre officials for timely resolution.
He also appealed to the Nigerian Air Force and other stakeholders in the host community to support efforts to address challenges relating to power supply and infrastructure, with a view to transforming the centre into a model study centre.
While acknowledging the efforts of previous Directors in improving the centre, Dr. Disu expressed his readiness to build on the progress already made.
He assured the University Management of his commitment to contributing his quota towards the realisation of NOUN’s goals and aspirations.
