The Assistant Comptroller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Zone H, Mr. Godwin Uchepa, has expressed his readiness to partner with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Makurdi Study Centre, Benue State.
Mr. Uchepa, whose Zone H covers states of Benue, Kogi, Kwara, and Plateau, said the aim was to establish a Prison Study Centre in Makurdi so as to provide more opportunities for inmates.
The ACG revealed this while on a courtesy visit to the Makurdi Study Centre with some of his officers and expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with the university as a worthy venture.
He shared his experience of facilitating the establishment of similar centres in Kaduna, Lafia, and Kuje.
Uchepa said the reason the service is very keen in partnering with the Makurdi Study Centre to set up a prison centre was to provide more opportunities for inmates’ enrollment and to help with their reintegration into the society.
The Centre Director, Dr. (Mrs.) Sarah Alao, while welcoming him and his team, expressed appreciation for the visit, and highlighted the existing relationship between the centre and the correctional service, as the next-door neighbour.
Alao advocated for the staff of the Service to seize the opportunity the university offers to acquire additional education which will add to their knowledge and also to upscale themselves.
She also underscored the fact that some of the Correctional Service staff are students of the centre, while some have graduated alongside other inmates during the 2024 convocation ceremony.
The director subsequently took her visitors on a tour of the center's facilities.
