The National Open University of Nigeria, Service Compact Unit (NOUN SERVICOM), has held a 1-day training for the environmental attendants of the university during its first quarterly meeting.
The event took place on Monday, March 16, 2026, at the conference hall, Senate Building, Jabi, Abuja.
While speaking, the Nodal Officer of the SERVICOM Unit, Mrs. Foluke Adeniran told participants that SERVICOM is about efficient and effective service delivery.
She emphasised the importance of the training as one which would boast the service delivery of the environmental attendants in the institution to keep the university environment tidy.
Adeniran appreciated the NOUN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Uduma O. Uduma, for giving her the privilege to serve as a Nodal Officer.
On her part, the director, Human Resources (Junior Section), Dr. Fumi Adeoye, noted that some cleaning items can be refurbished in good shape and can still be useful, adding that recyclables waste should be kept, such as paper which can be converted to tissue paper and non-recyclables waste should be kept in the dark bin.
She disclosed that sweeping has some limitations. “You can't get all the dirt out through the local method of sweeping and the advanced method of cleaning is vacuum machine usage, but the figure eight method of cleaning should be done manually to ensure a neat job, using some physical descriptions.”
Adeoye added that a cleaner should use two buckets to clean up the floors and corners should be supervised also. “Avoid the use of vinegar, avoid seam mops while cleaning, it will spoil your cleaning and might affect your health.”
The university’s environmental attendants were informed of the classification of waste, as there are different kinds of waste such as general waste, clinical waste and hazardous waste, which should be disposable immediately too.
“We have different kinds of bins; I am going to tell you how each one is being used so that you can use it properly. We have yellow, green, blue, black and red bins.
“Self-care should be your priority as an environment attendant to protect your body when discharging your duties,” she advised, urging them to always change hands regularly after cleaning work.
The SERVICOM Representative from the Presidency, Mrs. Kikelomo Ania, while offering her remarks, said everyone has a role to play in effective service delivery.
“If you leave your beats and do not do your duties it will affect service delivery. As an environmental attendant you are very important because of the key responsibilities you play," Ania said.
She urged the SERVICOM representatives to summit their reports timely, even as she encouraged staff to use the suggestion box within the university’s premises for complaints.
