The Vice-Chancellor, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Olufemi Peters, has commended the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN) for its commitment to advancing biotechnology as a tool for addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.
Peters made this commendation during a one-day symposium themed: "GMOs and Vaccines: Myths, Advances, and Prospects," organised by the society in honour of its Board of Trustee Chairman, Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe, held at the Conference Hall of the university’s headquarters, Jabi Abuja, on Monday, November 18, 2024.
According to him, “The role of biotechnology in revolutionizing agriculture, healthcare, and environmental management cannot be overstated."
Peters stressed the need for collaboration between academia, industry, and government to drive innovation and improve the nation's global competitiveness in biotechnology.
Peters in his opening address, also commended the BSN for its commitment to advancing biotechnology as a tool for addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.
He underscored the significance of the symposium, stating that it aligned with NOUN's mission of fostering accessible and impactful education and research.
‘’The significance of this symposium, aligns with NOUN's mission of fostering accessible and impactful education and research," he added.
The Vice-Chancellor also noted NOUN’s readiness to support research and capacity-building initiatives, reaffirming the NOUN’s position as a centre for interdisciplinary collaboration.
He expressed optimism that the symposium would generate solutions to harness the potentials of biotechnology.
In her remarks, BSN President, Prof. Sylvia Uzochukwu FBSN, highlighted the critical role biotechnology plays in advancing public health and agriculture.
She called for informed discussions to dispel myths surrounding Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and vaccines while emphasising their potential for societal progress.
On his part, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, who was represented by Prof. Eric Elias, emphasised the sector's capacity to drive economic growth, enhance food security, and combat environmental challenges.
Kuta highlighted the importance of collaborative research and innovation in achieving sustainable development goals, urging stakeholders to prioritise the translation of scientific discoveries into practical solutions.
He applauded BSN for fostering dialogue noting that such engagements are vital for bridging the gap between research and real-world application.
He also reiterated his university's commitment to advancing biotechnology through academic programmes and research initiatives.
He called for increased funding and supportive policies to enable Nigerian scientists to compete on a global scale.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Sylvester Oikeh, TELA MAIZE Project Manager at the Africa Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF).
Oikeh presented on "The Safety History of TELA MAIZE," detailing the rigorous scientific research and regulatory processes that ensure the crop's safety and efficacy in addressing food security challenges in Africa.
His address emphasised the extensive research and regulatory measures that validate the safety of TELA MAIZE, a climate-resilient and pest-resistant genetically modified (GM) maize designed to enhance food security in sub-Saharan Africa.
He also addressed public concerns about genetically modified crops, reinforcing the scientific consensus on their safety and the need for innovative solutions to Africa's agricultural challenges.
The celebrant, Prof. Tenebe, in his closing remarks, expressed gratitude for the honour and commended the BSN for its dedication to advancing biotechnology in Nigeria.
Tenebe , a former NOUN VC, called for sustained efforts to educate the public about the benefits and safety of biotechnological innovations.
He stressed their potential to transform critical sectors like agriculture and health.
The symposium brought together experts and stakeholders in biotechnology to discuss advancements and address misconceptions in the field.
However, it concluded with an award ceremony and a resolution to enhance public awareness and rese arch funding for biotechnology.
