The Nigerian Red Cross Society has conducted a two-day intensive First Aid training for staff of the Benin Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), as part of efforts to strengthen workplace safety and emergency preparedness.
The Centre Director, Dr. Akeem B. Disu, received the Red Cross resource persons and formally introduced them to members of staff selected to participate in the training.
The programme was designed to equip participants with practical life-saving skills and enhance their ability to provide immediate assistance during medical emergencies before the arrival of professional healthcare personnel.
The training was facilitated by Esezobor, Disaster Coordinator for Egor Local Government Area of Edo State and a certified trainer with the Nigerian Red Cross Society.
Drawing on his extensive experience in disaster management and emergency response, he combined theoretical instruction with practical demonstrations to deliver comprehensive lessons on essential first aid techniques.
Explaining the importance of first aid, Esezobor described it as the immediate care given to victims of accidents, sudden illnesses or other emergencies before they are taken to a healthcare facility for further treatment.
He emphasised that prompt and appropriate first aid intervention can significantly improve survival rates and minimise the severity of injuries.
Participants received comprehensive instruction on the fundamentals of first aid, including the roles and responsibilities of a first aider, the qualities of an effective first responder, the Golden Rules of First Aid, the 4Bs Principle, the scope of first aid practice, and the principles of resuscitation using the DRABCD approach.
They were also trained on the appropriate response to unresponsive casualties and the common causes of unconsciousness.
The programme further covered the identification and management of common emergencies such as fainting, shock, choking, bites and stings, fractures, joint and muscle injuries, burns and scalds.
Participants were guided on the appropriate first aid measures required to stabilise casualties until professional medical care becomes available.
A major highlight of the training was the practical session, during which participants demonstrated Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), recovery positioning and other essential first aid techniques using training dummies under expert supervision.
The hands-on exercises enabled participants to build confidence and competence in applying the skills acquired during the programme.
Speaking at the close of the training, the management of the Benin Study Centre commended the Nigerian Red Cross Society for organising the timely and impactful programme.
The management noted that the training had significantly enhanced staff capacity to respond effectively to emergencies within the study centre, while contributing to a safer and more secure learning and working environment.
The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to promote occupational safety, strengthen emergency preparedness and foster a culture of prompt, effective response to medical emergencies across the university community.
