The National Centre for Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE) In-Service Education and Training (INSET) has recently engaged the National Open University of Nigeria's Staff School (NSS), Kaduna, in a practical teaching session.

Speaking with NOUN News during the practical session, the overseer of the SMASE-INSET Centre, situated at the National Teachers Institute, Kaduna, Mr. Musbahu Adamu Sani, stated that they were at NSS alongside participants from four states of the federation who came for the SMASE training.

He explained that the main task of SMASE was to train and retrain teachers on how to build their capacity for effective teaching and learning of mathematics in basic schools.

Sani shed light on the training, stating that when participants come for the SMASE training, they engage in theoretical aspects at the institution, while the practical teaching aspect is conducted by visiting neighboring schools as a corporate social responsibility.

"Therefore, we choose schools based on proximity to the institution or based on corporate social responsibility, so as to have practical teaching," said Sani.

He added that this is with a view to enabling the chosen schools to benefit from the methodology they deploy in teaching and learning mathematics, particularly in some concepts that have been identified as difficult to teach and learn.

Speaking on the participants, Sani said he was with a team of participants from Imo, Plateau, Nasarawa, and Oyo States for this practical teaching session.

He emphasised that they had been visiting nearby schools and have now chosen NOUN Staff School to conduct the practical teaching so that the school could also be part of the process and subsequently be considered for future practical teaching sessions.#

The techniques and modalities used in teaching mathematics concepts would be learned and acquired by the NSS teaching staff, enabling them to apply them in their classrooms and achieve better learning outcomes from their learners, Sani added.

He then gifted the NSS Staff School mathematics and science textbooks for the school's consumption, on behalf of SMASE-INSET.

Earlier, Mrs. Ramatu Shuaib, who received the team on behalf of the Head of Administration, expressed her appreciation for finding NSS worthy of conducting the practical session of the training.

She further stated that the school is open to this kind of collaboration, as it will enhance both learning and teaching modalities and the capacity of teachers and pupils.

Shuaib thanked the SMASE-INSET team for the kind gesture of gifting the school mathematics and science textbooks as part of their social responsibility.

The overseer of SMASE-INSET was accompanied by the Head of Department of Mathematics, Mr. Yahaya Sani Rigachikun, the Head of Department of Sciences, Mr. Ahmed Muyyideen, and the president of the training, Mr. Victor Gowon, who came from Plateau State.
