Acting Director, Wase Community Study Centre, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State, Dr. Rabiat Abdullahi Lawal, has said there has been a noticeable surge in students enrollment at the centre.
She said irrespective of the rural nature of the environment where the centre is located, the enrollment trajectory is encouraging.
Lawal revealed this in a chat with NOUN News correspondent in her office located along Dengi Road, Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State.
At the time of this report, she informed that the enrollment stands at 203, including some that transferred from other centres, in a short time the centre was inaugurated.
With this impressive enrollment, the director said the management of the centre was prepared for the ongoing 2024_2 POP, examination, as they equally have candidates for the forthcoming e-exams.
She mentioned that the enrollment was due to the aggressive advocacy embarked upon by the management and staff of the centre.
She stated that the centre mapped out different strategies suitable for their environment and embarked on it right from the onset, by visiting the emirs, religious organisations, market associations, radio stations, tertiary and secondary schools, among others.
She said due to the massive and conducive infrastructure, which is strategically located as the only centre in the Plateau South, and with the support of the management and stakeholders, the centre has the prospect of becoming the best among NOUN centres.
The director added that she intended to mobilise stakeholders for scholarship and also sustain aggressive advocacy for higher enrollments, mobilise resources for the completion of the perimeter fence, and to make sure members of staff are trained for effective productivity, among others.
“I am determined to harness all resources available to make the study centre a better and conducive environment for academic activities,” she said.
According to her, some of the efforts are already yielding results, with the installation of a CCTV Camera in the CBT hall from a member of the State House of Assembly, representing the constituency, Hon. Ibrahim Adamu Galadima, as more is being expected.
Furthermore, she said part of the resolve was to ensure that students receive adequate attention from staff.
Lawal added that "all efforts are geared towards sustaining and to bring about a high impact and conducive learning environment for students and the host community."
She, however, posited that although basic infrastructures have been provided for takeoff, there is still more to be done in the area of alternative power supply, provision of broadband internet connectivity for enhanced service delivery and to support students’ academic
