NOUN inaugurates correctional centre in Ebonyi

The Vice-Chancellor, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), has inaugurated a Special Study Centre for the Nigerian Correctional Service at Abakaliki in Ebonyi State. 

Prof. Peters, represented at the cerermony held on August 30, 2025 by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Isaac Buswat, expressed the university's commitment to supporting inmates across the country in accessing quality education.

He urged the inmates to make use of the opportunity provided by NOUN to upscale themselves towards becoming better and useful persons in the society after their incarceration. 

The VC encouraged them not to be deterred by their current circumstances, but to remain hopeful of a better tomorrow.

A Federal House of Representatives member, representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency and Chairman, House Committee on Reformatory Institutions, Rt. Hon. Chinedu Onah, lauded the efforts of the university for bringing affordable higher education to the reach of the less privileged persons in the society. 

Hon. Onah promised to use his good office in supporting the gesture even as 25 inmates were already qualified to enrol at the facility. 

He advised the inmates to take hold of the opportunity extended to them by the institution and become better persons in the country. 

The legislator commended the collaborative efforts of stakeholders who are working towards reforming correctional centres and their unwavering commitment towards enhancing the welfare and rehabilitation of inmates nationwide. 

Some eminent personalities from the university present at the event were: the Registrar, Mr. Oladipo Ajayi, the Director, Abakaliki Study Centre, Dr. Udu Ama Aka and the university’s Coordinator, Special Study Centres, Mrs. Modupe Adesina. 

Others included the representatives from the state government and the security agencies.
