In an effort to prioritise education and develop human capital, the Oka-Akoko community in Ondo State has executed sundry projects worth one million, one hundred thousand naira (₦1,100,000.00) to the community’s study centre of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
The gesture reflects the community’s commitment of improving educational opportunities in its locality, which was a response to an earlier request made by the Study Centre Director, Dr. Babajide Oyadeyi, during a meeting of the Gown-Town Committee.
The initiative was aimed at tackling essential infrastructure deficits and operational challenges that have hindered the centre's ability to effectively serve its expanding student population.
The director said the centre acquired a 4.5 generator that serves as a backup, two high-speed printers, installation of a 24-port switch, and installation of two pieces of 225A changeover.
Oka-Akoko Centre, according to him, has also benefitted from works such as re-wiring and fixing of sockets of the e-library, currently serving as the temporary e-examination centre.
The director commended the community's proactive stance in developing the centre, which will go along way in strengthening their partnership.
The Olubaka of Oka, His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Adebori Adeleye, OON, has frequently emphasised that the presence of the NOUN Study Centre in the community is a blessing to Akoko land, as it provides flexible and affordable higher education to those who might otherwise be excluded from the conventional university system.
The Chairman of the committee that executed the projects, Chief Clement Dara, also acknowledged the educational importance of the institution to the community, citing the donation as an investment towards the community.
Dara added that the gesture was to ensure that the youths and the entire Akoko indigenes can access education without leaving their doorsteps.
