The Director, Port Harcourt Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Dr. Theresa Ucheoma Ettu, has charged members of staff to uphold self-discipline, professionalism, integrity and exemplary conduct in the discharge of their official responsibilities.
Ettu gave the charge on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, during a meeting with staff of the centre, where she emphasised the importance of discipline and responsible conduct in creating a conducive environment for effective learner support, academic mentoring and administrative service delivery.
The Centre Director urged staff to lead by example and avoid behaviours capable of undermining the image, values and reputation of the university.
She stressed that staff members were expected to demonstrate professionalism and serve as positive role models to students and visitors, noting that their conduct could significantly influence the public perception of NOUN.
On staff-to-staff and staff-to-student relationships, Ettu called for courtesy, politeness and professionalism in all interpersonal interactions with colleagues, students and visitors.
She noted that the manner in which staff relate with one another and with students contributes significantly to the perception of the university and its commitment to quality service delivery.
Ettu also underscored the need for sustained cleanliness and environmental responsibility within the study centre.
She recalled the commendation received from the Director, Directorate of Learner Support Services (DLSS), Prof. Tessy Angba, on the centre’s level of cleanliness, urging staff to maintain or improve on the existing standard.
The director particularly cautioned staff against littering and improper use of toilet facilities, stressing that maintaining a clean environment was a collective responsibility.
“Don’t see any litter and pass as if it doesn’t concern you. You will all recall that, following the advice of Professor Monioluwa Olaniyi during her 2026_1 examination monitoring, to construct a refuse-dump perimeter behind the premises to prevent wind from blowing papers and sachet-water nylon across parts of the compound, we immediately carried out the project,” she said.
Ettu expressed satisfaction that the initiative had helped address the problem of litter being blown around the premises, adding that staff should not litter the environment or ignore students who engage in such practices.
“Cleanliness is a community effort,” she stressed.
On the preparation for 2026_2 Examinations, the Centre Director further directed faculty desk officers to commence the clearance of students for the 2026_2 examinations immediately.
She instructed the officers to clearly inform students that once they had completed the clearance process, they must not add or drop courses, warning that any subsequent changes could invalidate their clearance and create difficulties with server script submission during examinations.
Ettu also directed staff to ensure that both old and newly admitted students obtain their identity cards ahead of the forthcoming examinations.
She stressed that students without acceptable means of identification would not be permitted into examination halls.
The Centre Director further emphasised that students should obtain their identity cards through the Study Centre Café as part of measures to curb identity-card impersonation and strengthen the integrity of the university’s examination process.
On advocacy activities, some members of staff confirmed that they had been listening to the centre’s advocacy jingles and advertisements broadcast on Wazobia FM and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).
Ettu encouraged staff to remain committed to their responsibilities and uphold the values of discipline, integrity, courtesy and accountability.
She noted that collective adherence to these principles would strengthen the centre’s advocacy efforts, attract more students and enhance the effectiveness and reputation of the Port Harcourt Study Centre.
According to her, maintaining a positive public image of the centre was essential to projecting the values and standards of NOUN.
