The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Otukpo Study Centre in Benue State, has strengthened its emergency response capacity following a practical First Aid and emergency response training for selected staff.
The training, held recently under the leadership of the Centre Director, Prof. Adakole Ikpe, was designed to equip participating staff with essential knowledge and practical skills to respond promptly and appropriately to medical emergencies, injuries and other unforeseen incidents within the centre.
The programme underscored the importance of preparedness and immediate intervention in safeguarding the wellbeing of staff, students and visitors, particularly in situations where timely first aid can make a critical difference before professional medical assistance becomes available.
The training was facilitated by the trio of Mr Alao Nurudeen, Mr Oche Ikor and Mr Stephen Sunday, who combined theoretical instruction with practical demonstrations to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of basic first aid and emergency response procedures.
Through interactive sessions, participants were exposed to fundamental first aid principles, appropriate responses to emergencies, and practical measures for managing injuries and other medical situations that could arise within an institutional environment.
The staff who participated in the training included Mr. Nyietsgher Simon Terlumun, Mr. Awulu Sunday John and Mrs. Ogbe Blessing.
Speaking on the significance of the programme, Prof. Ikpe expressed appreciation to the facilitators for sharing their professional knowledge and practical experience with the staff.
He stressed the importance of cultivating a culture of safety and preparedness at the Study Centre, noting that staff equipped with basic emergency response skills would be better positioned to protect lives and minimise the impact of unforeseen incidents.
The training was described as a significant step towards strengthening the emergency response capacity of the Otukpo Study Centre and promoting a safe, secure and supportive learning and working environment.
The centre management expressed optimism that participants would apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the training when necessary, while also promoting greater awareness of safety and emergency preparedness among the wider Study Centre community.
The initiative further underscores the commitment of the Otukpo Study Centre to staff development, institutional safety and the overall wellbeing of its students, staff and visitors.
