In an effort towards increasing students’ enrollments in their respective centres, the Jalingo and Gulak Study Centres have taken advocacy campaigns to various grassroots levels in their respective areas.
While officials of Jalingo Study Centre led by the Acting Director, Mr. Bala Lazarus Sabo stormed Bureau for Lands and Survey, Jalingo, the Gulak Community Study Centre, on the other hand, under the leadership of the Chief Counselor, Mrs. Margaret Yamtu, visited the Library Department of the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, Adamawa State.
In an audience with his team, Sabo explained that the purpose of their visit was to sensitise staff of Lands and Survey of the benefits in taking advantage of the presence and programmes of NOUN to update and upgrade themselves academically through qualitative, accessible and flexible system of tertiary education the university offers.
The director rolled out the university’s programmes and its modus operandi to the staff as he highlighted major aspects of the activities in NOUN, the university’s mission as well as its vision.
He said the university has a mandate of taking education to the doorsteps of Nigerians by removing barrier of age, gender or other circumstances.
Sabo later encouraged the staff to embrace the opportunity offered by the university to enrol by looking at the affordability of the various programmes.
The Chief Counsellor of the centre, Mrs. Akafa R.N. also talked on the flexibility aspect of the university and cleared misconception on the question whether the university is made only for working class people or for both young and old.
Acting Permanent Secretary of the Bureau for Land and Survey, Mr. Muhammad Lawan Buba, while responding, expressed appreciation for the visit and promised to encourage his staff to join and benefit from the educational opportunities of NOUN.
He also advised the team to extend this golden opportunity to the villagers and so as to encourage them as well.
On their part, the advocacy team of Gulak Community Study Centre visited the Department of Library Services of the Federal Polytechnic Mubi, Adamawa state for enlightenment and sensitisation
The team, led by Mrs. Yamtu, was received by the Librarian, Mr. Peter Odeh, who led them to meet the library staff for an interactive session.
The Deputy Rector, Administration, Dr. Jacob Y. Kadala, who is also the Acting Rector, was present at the interactive session, after which Yamtu sensitised the library staff on the golden opportunities that abound at the National Open University of Nigeria for their personal and professional growth.
She emhasised on the uniqueness of the university especially its flexibility, and encouraged them to enroll, urging them to ask questions for clarifications.
Yamtu shared printed copies of the programmes to each staff of the library and explained the need for them to further their studies.
During the question and answer session, the acting rector requested whether it would be possible for the university to run Master and PhD in Library Science, as the director informed him that the management of the university is still working on it and request will be sent for speedy process of the programme
Kadala was later decorated as NOUN Ambassador, while souvenir was presented to the librarian, Mr. Peter Odeh.
