The Multi-purpose Cooperative Society of the Centre of Human Resource Development (CHRD), National Open University of Nigeria's (NOUN), has conducted its first executive members election in over a decade.
Both the contestants and members of the society who spoke to NOUN News shortly before the polls agreed that it was a milestone event that marked a significant step towards democratic governance and transparency within the society.
Announcing the result, the Returning Officer, Mr. Wali Gadzama, stated that Mr. Boyo Christopher Tosan accumulated 73 votes, while Dyeri Jonathan got 43 votes, and Gideon Anthllon Musa secured 11 votes.
Following the fulfillment of all requirements and garnering the highest number of votes, Mr. Boyo Christopher Tosan was declared the winner and elected as the new CHRD Cooperative President.
Other elected officials included Mr. Muhammad Dantani as Vice President, Mrs. Joy Okpanachi as General Secretary, Mrs. Akila Happiness as Assistant General Secretary, Mr. Danfari Kakuri John as Treasurer, and Onome Esther Ererobe as Financial Secretary, all of whom contested unopposed.
The election was conducted under the watchful eyes of Mr. Wali Gadzama of the Bursary Unit of the Kaduna Study Centre and Mr. Abdulsalam Ojulari, who served as Returning Officer and Technical Officer, respectively.
Both officials were independent and non-members of the cooperative, ensuring the integrity and transparency of the electoral process.
The election, conducted under the supervision of the Chairman, Mr. Samson G. Diale, a security staff member of the university, employed a dual voting system to ensure that all members had an equal opportunity to participate.
Diale said the manual and electronic voting systems allowed members outside the centre to cast their votes, ensuring a fair and inclusive process.
He said the electoral body used two systems of voting to prevent disenfranchisement and ensure that all members could exercise their rights to vote.
He added that the approach enabled those outside the centre to participate in the election and choose their leaders.
The chairman disclosed that "this historic election demonstrates the cooperative's commitment to democratic principles and transparency, setting a positive precedence for other cooperatives and organisations."
The election was adjudged to be free and fair, with agents of all aspirants accepting the outcome of the results.
