The Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru, has called on stakeholders and Nigerians to be cautious about the restrictions being placed on law graduates of the National Open University of Nigeria, (NOUN).
Governor Nwifuru made the call Friday, August 8, 2026 during a meeting with the NOUN management in Abakaliki.
He stated that NOUN, as a federal government university, is not only populated by accomplished professionals and scholars, but also produces sound and well-informed graduates.
The Governor charged the Vice-Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma, to lead a robust advocacy against the discrimination and exclusion of the university’s law graduates from the law school.
He stressed that such restrictions undermine the credibility of a federal institution and deny qualified Nigerians the opportunity to contribute to national development.
The NOUN Vice-Chancellor, who led a strong delegation to the state's Government House in Abakaliki, had earlier commended the governor for a warm reception.
Prof. Uduma appealed to the governor to provide a permanent site to the university's Abakaliki Study Centre, which is hitherto operating in a temporary location, thereby making it difficult to bring development projects.
He urged the Governor Nwifiru to equally help the centre with infrastructure to serve as a conducive environment for learning.
The VC also commended the governor for revamping the education sector in the state, including the provision of foreign and local scholarships to the state's primary and secondary pupils.
