High Turnout as NOUN Conducts Governing Council Elections for Senate and Congregation

The National Open University of Nigeria, (NOUN), has released the results of the just concluded elections for Senate and Congregation representatives into the Governing Council of the university.

According to the results, four out of the seven Senate candidates who contested emerged victorious as Senate representatives. Similarly, two out of the four Congregation candidates emerged victorious.

A breakdown of the results shows that Prof. Tessy Angba, Prof. Ernest Ugbeje, Prof. U.S.A. Osuji, and Prof. Gideon Omachonu emerged as the four Senate representatives, having polled the highest number of votes in descending order.

For the Congregation, Mr. Anthony Akubo and Dr. Sefinat Omuya emerged winners after securing the first and second highest votes, respectively.

In a memo signed by the Registrar of the university, Mr. Oladipo Ajayi, stated that 89.4% of accredited members of the University Senate participated in the election, while 85% of accredited members of the Congregation also voted.

Mr. Ajayi attributed the high voter turnout to the extensive engagement and mobilisation by the contestants.

The elections, which were conducted electronically, were held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at the University Headquarters in Abuja.
