
The Director, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Dr. Francis Osah, has said that his team has visited Kaduna to assess the level of implementation of the fibre optic project
Speaking to NOUN News, the director, who was accompanied by the Personnel Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor, Mr. Adebayo Adewoye, revealed that the project, Tetfund-sponsored, was attracted by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters in order to enhance efficiency in the service delivery.
He added that Kaduna Centre was one of those centres designated to benefit from the project and was selected to be the hub where all the centres within the North-west geopolitical zone are to get connected.
"Fibre optic is a technology that the internet travel through the speed of light. So internet is delivered through the speed of light when you deploy fibre," he said.
Pointing out the level of the implementation, the director stated that they have seen and inspected the level of work done and listed out areas that were covered which include Kaduna Study Centre, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and NOUN E-library.
He mentioned that the Centre for Human Resource Development (CHRD), NOUN Staff School, Farm House, and NOUN Guest House are all expected to be affected.
The director also narrated that they have invited the contractors and had a meeting with them where they ordered them to complete their jobs by covering those areas initially left out.
Osah emphasised that at the end of the day NOUN is going to have a study centre that has "Wifi internet connectivity" for staff, students and visitors.
"By so doing, there is going to be efficiency from part of the staff and also improve learning environment for the students.
"We have noticed that most of our students are now youths; they will effectively access the internet for their studies and facilitator and a host of academic activities," director said.
Kaduna Study Centre director, Dr. Babangida Iro, while responding to questions filed by NOUN News stated that when the project is completed it will imcrease the work schedule of the centre.
It will enhance effective communication and uplift the learning environment that will attract more clients and increase students enrolment, said Iro.
In addition, the director stated that the internet will increase students engagement with the centre, creating seamless facilitation and eases the work for staffers.
