A team from the National Universities Commission (NUC) were on a routine programmes' accreditation exercise at the Kaduna Study Centre, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
The team was led by Professor R. Okuneye of the University of Lagos as Chairman, with Professor G. Yakasai and Professor B. Ayuba as members from Bayero University, Kano and University of Abuja, respectively.
Mrs. Eucharia C. Ike was an embedded NUC representative.
Speaking shortly with NOUN News after the exercise, the Head of the Department of Health Education and Human Kinetics, Dr. Waziri Bala, explained that the two courses had an initial interim approval.
Bala said the university is optimistic the programmes will gain full accreditation status with the level of current development.
On the importance of the exercise, the HOD stated that it will ensure quality of education and will afford the university the ability to meet minimum standards for quality education as prescribed by the NUC, thereby protecting students from substandard education and certificates.
He added that it will promote accountability among universities and encourage them to maintain high standards, challenging them to continue to improve on their service delivery.
"Accreditation enhances the credibility of university, both nationally and internationally, making the degrees more recognisable and respected," said Bala.
On his part, the Director, Kaduna Study Centre, Dr. Babangida Iro, stated that the university has provided modern infrastructure like the digital regional library that has been on ground to support the accreditation exercise at all times.
Iro added that the university has ensured that its faculty and staff are qualified, experienced, and sufficient in number to support the exercise.
He noted that NOUN has reviewed and updated the curriculum of the two programmes (B.Sc Ed Health Education and Human kinetics) undergoing accreditation to ensure that they meet the NUC standards.
Some of the activities held by the accreditation team were inspection of the digital regional library, examination hall 1 & 2, group counseling & counselor's office.
Others were Information and Communication Technology Unit, Store, Desk Officers' Office and NOUN Kaduna Campus stadium.
In addition, the team interviewed the heads of units of the centre, students and had interaction with the facilitators of the courses undergoing the accreditation exercise.
