The newly-appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Professor Shehu Usman Adamu, has unveiled a bold agenda aimed at driving innovation and strengthening the university’s Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system.
Professor Adamu made this known when the Faculty of Education staff paid him a congratulatory visit on Wednesday, November 12, 2025 at the university headquarters in Abuja.
The delegation led by the dean of the faculty, Professor Bamikole Ogunleye,included the Faculty Officer, Mrs. Deborah Ubaji; Head of the Department of Educational Foundations, Professor Gabriel Job; Head of the Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education, Dr. Hakeem Olaniyi Liadi; Head of the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education, Dr. Bala Waziri Kwata; and the Chief Clerical Officer of the faculty, Mrs. Oyintarela Abarugu.
In his remarks, Professor Adamu expressed appreciation to the Faculty of Education for the visit and outlined some key areas of improvement for the faculty and the university at large.
He emphasised the need for innovation in teaching methods and delivery, as well as the automation of course modules to maintain a competitive edge in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) compared to other ODL institutions and conventional universities.
Speaking about his background, the DVC noted that he hails from the Faculty of Health Sciences and is also an alumnus of the Faculty of Education, having obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from NOUN in 2022.
“I so much believe in the system now that if we put in our best, it can be one of the most credible academic systems in the country,” he said.
Adamu commended the transparency and integrity of the university’s academic process, recalling that during his studies, there were no cases of extortion, result manipulation, or victimisation of students.
“You work and get what you worked for,” he affirmed.
The DVC further pledged his commitment to contributing his best to the development of the institution, collaborating effectively with staff, and remaining open to constructive criticism.
According to him, every staff member plays a vital role in the progress of the university.
Responding, members of the faculty congratulated the DVC and assured him of their full support and cooperation as he takes on his new responsibilities.
