New students of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Special Study Centre for the Nigerian Police, Dei-Dei, Abuja, have been urged to embrace discipline, perseverance and service while translating their education into practical solutions that benefit society.
The Director of the Study Centre, Prof. Eje Adakole Odike, gave the charge during the centre’s Orientation and Matriculation Ceremony, which also featured a medical outreach organised by Direct Entry Students (DES) and a mini trade fair.
While congratulating the newly admitted students, Odike described their admission into the university as a significant step towards personal growth, professional development and a brighter future.
He urged them to take responsibility for their academic success by remaining committed, disciplined and focused while making effective use of the opportunities provided by the university.
According to him, success in an academic environment goes beyond meeting academic requirements, as students must also cultivate effective time-management skills, integrity and perseverance.
“Do not be discouraged by challenges. Stay focused on your goals and make the most of your time at NOUN,” he advised.
Odike also highlighted the broader purpose of education, commending the DES students for organising the medical outreach as a demonstration of service to the University Community.
He noted that initiatives of this nature showed how education could be translated into practical benefits for society, urging students to participate in activities that positively impact their communities.
The director also identified the mini trade fair as an opportunity for students to transform their skills, talents and creativity into viable business ventures.
He encouraged them to showcase their businesses and innovative ideas while supporting one another through networking, collaboration and the exchange of knowledge.
According to him, such platforms could help students establish sustainable enterprises, develop entrepreneurial skills and build valuable connections beyond the classroom.
Odike expressed optimism that the orientation programme would prepare the newly admitted students for their responsibilities as members of the University Community and instil in them the right mindset for their academic journey.
He urged them to remain determined and make the most of their time at NOUN, expressing confidence that commitment and perseverance would help them achieve their educational and professional aspirations.
He wished the students a rewarding academic experience and success in their studies and future endeavours.
