The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Staff School, Kaduna, has recorded an impressive performance at the 2026 Sports Competition hosted by the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, emerging as one of the standout schools at the event.
Invited to participate in the annual competition, NOUN Staff School mobilised a contingent of 16 pupils. Eight pupils competed in various track events for both boys and girls, while the remaining eight served as supporters, cheering the team throughout the competition.
The school's athletes delivered commendable performances, securing a gold medal in the boys’ 4x100 metres relay event. The girls’ relay team also made a strong showing, earning a bronze medal after an impressive performance on the track.
Reacting to the achievement, the Director of the Centre for Human Resource Development, Dr. Amos Iliya, reaffirmed his commitment to the holistic development of every pupil under the care of the institution, stressing the critical role sports play in achieving that objective.
According to him, sports contribute significantly to the physical, mental, and emotional growth of children. Beyond promoting physical fitness, he noted that sporting activities help pupils develop focus, discipline, quick decision-making abilities, and problem-solving skills under pressure.
"Through team sports and individual competitions, pupils learn resilience, concentration, teamwork, and the importance of following instructions—qualities that positively impact their academic performance and personal development," he said.
Dr. Iliya further described sports as a powerful platform for projecting the image and values of the school.
"When our pupils participate in inter-school competitions and community sporting events, they become ambassadors of NOUN Staff School. Their conduct, teamwork, and excellence reflect the quality of education and character-building that the school provides," he stated.
He added that schools known for producing disciplined and high-performing athletes are often recognised for nurturing well-rounded individuals and promoting excellence beyond the classroom.
Highlighting the health benefits of sports, Dr. Iliya explained that regular physical activity strengthens the heart, builds strong bones and muscles, helps maintain a healthy weight, and contributes to improved mental wellbeing by reducing stress and anxiety while boosting self-esteem.
"In an era where children spend increasing amounts of time on digital devices, sports provide an essential balance that supports healthy physical and emotional development," he noted.
He assured parents, staff, and pupils that the management of NOUN Staff School would continue to prioritise sports development by providing the necessary facilities, equipment, and coaching support required for pupils to participate and excel.
"Together, we will raise pupils who are sound in mind, strong in body, and worthy ambassadors of our great school," he added.
Also speaking, the Head of Administration of NOUN Staff School, Mrs. Maryam Kida, told NOUN News that the competition provided pupils with a valuable opportunity to demonstrate teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship, and physical fitness.
She commended the pupils for their exemplary conduct throughout the event, noting that they represented the school with distinction and dignity.
Mrs. Kida added that the achievements recorded at the competition have further enhanced the reputation of NOUN Staff School and inspired greater enthusiasm for sporting activities among pupils.
She expressed confidence that the success would motivate more students to participate actively in future sporting events and strive for excellence both on and off the field.
