The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has recorded another academic milestone as Dr. John Kahugu Simon of the Department of Physics, Faculty of Sciences, was inducted as a member of the Nigerian Young Academy (NYA).
Simon, who is also the Acting Director of the Kagoro Community Study Centre, Kaduna, was inducted on Monday, August 17, 2026, following a highly competitive selection process that saw him emerge as one of only seven successful applicants admitted into the Academy during the 2026 membership induction cycle.
His selection was in recognition of his scholarly achievements, leadership qualities and contributions to national development.
The induction ceremony took place during the 16th International Conference and General Assembly of the Academy held at the Lagos State University (LASU).
The event was presided over by the President of the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS), Professor Abubakar Sambo.
The Nigerian Young Academy, an offshoot of the Nigerian Academy of Science, is a national body affiliated with the African Young Academy and the Global Young Academy.
It was established in August 2010 through the pioneering efforts of the Nigerian Academy of Science, with the support of the Nigerian Academy of Education and the Nigerian Academy of Engineering.
The Academy provides a platform for interaction, collaboration and intellectual engagement among outstanding young researchers in Nigeria.
Membership is open to scholars who are not more than 40 years of age at the point of entry and who are selected annually from diverse research disciplines and regions across the country.
Speaking on his induction, Dr. Simon expressed appreciation to the management of NOUN for providing him with opportunities to contribute to the advancement and visibility of the University.
He said the recognition would further motivate him to contribute to projecting the institution on national and international platforms while advancing his academic and professional development.
“I sincerely appreciate the management of the National Open University of Nigeria for granting me the opportunity to contribute my quota towards projecting our prestigious institution, enhancing its visibility on national and international platforms, and strengthening my career and professional development,” he said.
Simon also encouraged eligible young researchers and colleagues within the university to consider joining the Nigerian Young Academy, stressing the importance of collective efforts in promoting research, innovation and national development.
He expressed optimism that the platform would enable young Nigerian scholars to contribute more effectively to addressing national challenges and advancing the country’s development.
The induction adds to NOUN’s growing record of scholarly recognition and further reflects the contributions of its academics to research, leadership and national development.
