The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, has enjoined the National Open University of Nigeria Alumni Association (NOUNAA) to continue to project the positive image of the university wherever they find themselves.
He stated this while playing host to a delegation of the executive members of the body, led by its national president, Muntaka Abdul-Hadi Dabo, who called to congratulate the VC on his appointment.
The Vice-Chancellor, who also welcomed the delegation for taking out time from their various offices to felicitate with him, assured them of the university’s readiness to assist.
Responding to a request of financial assistance from the university, Peters acknowledged that “you didn’t ask a lot of things aside what we expected you to ask, but you need to write to us your plans, programmes and what you intend to implement with any requested funds.”
A visible alumnus, he said, is an added image-making outfit to the university, charging them to consider themselves as the ambassadors of the university. “We sought to hear from you, perception of people outside the shores of the institution,’’ he added.
The national president had earlier identified lack of funds as the single major shortfall in the delivery of the association’s mandate.
“No association can progress without funds, that is why we are passionately appealing to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Femi Peters and the management, to consider our appeal to enable the association deliver on its mandate,’’ he said.
Dabo, who led a 6-man delegation added that “We are here today to officially congratulate you on your election as VC of NOUN and successful assumption of office. NOUNAA felicitates with you and wishes you a tremendous success as you lead the affairs of this great institution forward.
“NOUNAA, under my leadership, looks forward to working closely with you towards the attainment of the university’s goals and vision.’’
He appealed to the management to tackle areas such as the poor IT infrastructure, inadequate study materials, certificate discrimination as some of the complaints they receive from students.
According to the leader of the delegation, NOUNAA is specifically interested in helping the university attain global recognition as Africa’s best single-mode Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institution.
Director of the supervisory directorate of Research Administration and Advancement (DRAA), Prof. Chiedu Mafiana, in his closing remark, thanked the VC for granting the association audience despite his busy schedule and looking kindly to the request while awaiting the work plans to be received by the association.
