The Abdulrasaq Abubakar Toyin University (AATU), Ilorin, Kwara State, has appointed Prof. Olayemi Mikail Olaniyi as its first substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The 47-year-old Professor of Computer Engineering was until his appointment the Dean, Faculty of Computing at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
According to a statement by the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Dada Obafemi, the appointment was approved by the Board of Trustees and ratified at its third meeting held on September 4, 2026. Prof. Olaniyi assumed office the same day.
Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, described the appointment as "a carefully considered decision."
Na’Allah expressed confidence that Olaniyi would bring his vast academic and administrative experience to bear on the day-to-day management of the university, adding that the new Vice-Chancellor would work closely with Council to strengthen institutional efficiency and drive development.
Prof. Olaniyi comes on board with about two decades of academic and administrative experience. He is expected to deploy his expertise in Computer Security, Intelligent and Embedded Systems, Applied Medical Informatics and Open and Distance Learning (ODL) to drive growth at the university.
Born in Ibadan, Oyo State, Olaniyi began his academic journey with a National Diploma in Computer Technology from the Federal Polytechnic, Offa.
He later obtained a Bachelor of Technology and a PhD in Computer Science and Engineering, with specialisation in Computer Security, from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, and a Master of Science in Electronic and Computer Engineering with Distinction from Lagos State University (LASU).
He is a member of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Computer Society (NCS), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and is a Registered Computer Engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).
He is married with children.
