Former Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Olufemi Peters, has urged newly admitted students to familiarise themselves with the university’s mode of instruction to succeed in their academic pursuits.
Peters gave the advice during the university’s matriculation ceremony, where he commended the fresh students for making the decision to pursue their education at the institution.
He explained that NOUN’s Open and Distance Learning (ODL) model differs from the conventional university system, requiring students to understand its teaching methods and effectively utilise the available learning technologies.
The former Vice-Chancellor advised the students to develop a consistent daily study routine, urging them to review their course materials every morning before engaging in other activities.
He also encouraged them to revisit what they had studied in the evening to reinforce their understanding and improve retention.
“In the evening, revisit what you studied to reinforce your memory. Cultivating this habit will significantly enhance daily retention,” he said.
Peters further advised the students to choose their associates carefully, warning them against peer groups that could distract them from their academic goals, both within and outside the university.
He also stressed the importance of diligent reading and active learning, urging the freshers to read extensively and seek clarification whenever they encountered concepts they did not understand.
Peters attended the matriculation ceremony to celebrate his son, who was among the newly admitted students formally inducted into the university.
