
Students of the National Open University of Nigeria [NOUN], Kaduna Study Centre, have undertaken various community development projects around Kaduna metropolis.
The students were grouped into ten groups (A - J) where each group came up with a project of interest.
One of the groups (B), who were the first to commission their project visited Al-Ihsan Balsuma Charity Orphanage Home in Kaduna.
The students distributed foodstuffs, educational materials and also had an interactive session with orphans as a way of offering their emotional support.
Through the community development project, the students were slso able to provide the following to the orphans and the orphanage home: 25kg of rice, one carton of spaghetti, three pieces of 3×4 whiteboard, three packs of whiteboard marker, three pieces of board duster, four dozens of book, one pack of biro and the cash donation of N20,000.

Speaking at the event, the Director of the Kaduna Study Centre, Dr. Babangida Iro, represented by the project supervisor, Mr. Nura Marafa, stated that “DES 303 Community Development” is a mandatory course, which students must undertake as part of their requirements for graduation.
He applauded the students for identifying a critical project that not only needed the intervention of the students on a community development project but all individuals from all walks of life.
The gesture , he added, will surely touch the minds of the orphans and encourage the proprietors on their selfless service to humanity.
Marafa further urged the students not to relent on the selfless services they undertook during their studentship, as he implored them to take it further even after their academic stints, which will serve as part of their contribution towards humanity.
While speaking to the orphans, Marafa described them as special, loved, and valued, therefore they were there to support, empower and help them reach their full potentials.
He said their smiles, energy, and resilience is a reminder that every child deserves a chance to thrive, and urged them to be good and behave well so that in the near future they can be worthy of emulation.

The student representatives at various commissioning levels unanimously stated in their speeches that community development is the process of strengthening and improving the social, economic and cultural well-being of the community where it involves working with the community members to identify their needs and proffer solutions to them.
They also added that one of the key areas of community development is supporting vulnerable groups such as orphans, less-privileged and areas of human concern.
They stated that the objective of the community development project was to contribute to the overall well-being of the communities, which includes providing them with the basic necessities, education, and emotional support,
