The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Special Study Centre for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), National Headquarters, Abuja, has taken a proactive step in advancing educational awareness through an advocacy visit to the Nigerian Correctional Officers’ Wives Association (NICOWA) School.
The visit, held on Thursday, October 16, 2025 was aimed at enlightening NICOWA and their immediate community on the numerous opportunities available through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) as exemplified by NOUN.
According to the Centre Director, Controller Francis Enobore (Rtd),the visit was a model that allows individuals to pursue education at their own pace, irrespective of age, location, or occupation.
Controller Enobore, who led the advocacy team reaffirmed the university’s unwavering commitment to promoting flexible, affordable, and inclusive education across Nigeria.
He said education should never be constrained by circumstance or environment, adding that the NOUN learning system is uniquely designed to accommodate working adults, homemakers, and individuals with tight schedules.
"Education should never be limited by age, distance, or occupation. At NOUN, we believe everyone deserves a chance to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully to society,” he said.
The Centre Director explained that the university’s Open and Distance Learning model provides a practical solution to educational challenges by allowing learners to balance academic pursuits with personal and professional responsibilities.
The interactive session that followed provided participants with detailed information about NOUN’s academic programmes, learner support systems, and the admission process, informational brochures and flyers were distributed to attendees.
The attendees also had the opportunity to ask questions about enrollment, study options, and support services.
In her goodwill message, Mrs. Elizabeth Jonathan, the Head Teacher of NICOWA School, expressed deep appreciation for the visit, describing it as timely and highly impactful.
She commended NOUN for its ongoing commitment to extending quality education to all sectors of society, especially the Nigerian Correctional Service community and their families.
Mrs. Jonathan assured the visiting team of the school’s readiness to collaborate with NOUN in future outreach programmes that will encourage more members of the correctional community to embrace lifelong learning.
The advocacy visit was part of the centre’s continuous effort to deepen public understanding of Open and Distance Learning and strengthen partnerships with organisations that share NOUN’s vision of expanding access to education for national development.
