NOUN English Department, Toyin Falola to Host Masterclass on Evolution of African Literature

The Department of English, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), in collaboration with renowned African scholar and historian, Professor Toyin Falola, will host a virtual masterclass on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, on the theme: "From Orature to Digital Culture: The Evolution of African Literature."

According to a memo signed by the Acting Head of the Department of English, Dr. Felicia Oamen, the masterclass is designed to examine the evolution of African literature from its rich oral traditions to contemporary digital expressions, while exploring emerging trends shaping the continent's literary and cultural landscape.

The session will focus on three key thematic areas: Digital Technology and the Orality Revolution; Participatory Performance, Artistic Communality and Cultural Values in African Society; and Orality, Development and the Future of African Knowledge Systems.

The programme is expected to bring together scholars, researchers, students, writers, and cultural practitioners with interests in African literary traditions, oral heritage, and digital culture.

Professor Falola, one of Africa's most celebrated scholars and a globally respected authority on African history, literature, and cultural studies, is widely recognised for his groundbreaking contributions to advancing knowledge of Africa's intellectual traditions and cultural heritage.

The masterclass will feature Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na'Allah as the lead lecturer, while Professor Mobolanle Sotunsa will serve as moderator. 

Professor Falola's collaboration with the Department underscores the event's commitment to fostering high-level scholarly engagement on the changing dynamics of African literature.

The virtual event will commence at 10:00 a.m. (Nigeria), 11:00 a.m. (South Africa), and 4:00 a.m. (Austin, Texas, USA).

Participants will have the opportunity to engage with leading scholars on the future of African literature, the preservation of oral traditions, and the transformative role of digital technology in Africa's literary and knowledge systems.
