The Centre Director, Port Harcourt Study Centre, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Dr. Theresa Ucheoma Ettu, has urged students to take full advantage of the various learner support services available to them throughout their programmes.
Ettu gave the charge at the general students’ forum and orientation programme for students of the 2026_2 academic session, organised by the Study Centre on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
The programme brought together students and officials of the Study Centre and provided a platform for interaction, information sharing and clarification of academic and administrative matters.
It also offered an opportunity to address issues of general relevance to all students before focusing on matters concerning newly admitted students.
Ettu, who welcomed participants on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma, the University Management and the Port Harcourt Study Centre, thanked the students for responding to the invitation.
She noted that their participation underscored the importance of Study Centres to the university's operations and service delivery, while reaffirming management's commitment to strengthening the centres for more effective support to learners.
Ettu reminded the students that NOUN operates within an Open and Distance Learning (ODL) framework, which requires learners to take substantial responsibility for their academic progress.
She therefore urged them to cultivate discipline, commitment and cooperation with the university's support structures, stressing that timely access to available services could help them navigate their academic journey more effectively.
The Centre Director specifically encouraged students to make proper use of learner support services, including counselling, ICT, administrative, bursary and library services.
She also urged the students to pay close attention to presentations by the various Unit Heads and Faculty Desk Officers, ask questions and seek clarification whenever necessary.
Other officers who addressed the forum included the Deputy Director, Counselling Services, Mrs. A. U. Makbere; Centre Accountant, Mrs. Peace K. Orji; Centre Librarian, Miss Josephine Iyara; Assistant Registrar, Mrs. Chinelo Egoigwe; and ICT Officer, Mr. Samuel Okolie-Odiwe, alongside other Unit Heads and Faculty Desk Officers.
The officers provided students with information on their respective areas of responsibility and explained the procedures and resources available to support their academic activities.
Highlights of the programme included a presentation on time management and study skills by Mrs. Makbere, interactive practical sessions on navigating the NOUN website and student portals led by ICT personnel, and a question-and-answer session.
The interactive session provided students with an opportunity to raise concerns and seek direct clarification from the resource persons, with the questions addressed accordingly.
