The newly appointed Director of the Badagry Study Centre, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Alero Akujobi, has led a delegation of staff on a courtesy visit to the Chairman of Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe.
Prof. Akujobi and her team were received by the Chairman and members of his management team at the Local Government Secretariat, Badagry.
Hunpe, who welcomed them, expressed appreciation for the visit, and highlighted the positive impact of education and professional development.
He noted that several members of his staff had benefited academically from programmes offered by NOUN.
The Council Chair urged the university to explore ways of expanding admission opportunities for interested local government personnel and broadening access to relevant programmes, particularly those aligned with the qualifications and professional needs of staff.
Hunpe also expressed the council’s willingness to collaborate with the Badagry Study Centre on sensitisation and advocacy programmes aimed at increasing awareness of NOUN’s academic opportunities within the local government and the wider Badagry community.
He proposed the coordination of activities involving the Heads of Education and Agriculture Departments within the local government to facilitate engagements with various groups, including Community-Driven Development (CDD) initiatives, farmers’ associations, artisans’ associations, the Joint Council of Corps Members and local government staff.
Responding, Prof. Akujobi expressed support for the proposed joint sensitisation initiative, describing it as a mutually beneficial opportunity for the university and the local government.
She assured the Chairman of the centre’s commitment to deepening its engagement with the community, stressing that “NOUN is for Badagry, and Badagry is for NOUN.”
The Director highlighted the flexibility and accessibility of NOUN’s programmes, encouraging the Chairman to promote the university’s undergraduate, master’s and PhD programmes among local government staff and residents.
Akujobi further disclosed that the Badagry Study Centre serves as the university’s international study centre, providing support to learners from neighbouring countries, including the Republic of Benin, Togo and Ghana.
In his remarks, Hunpe wished the new Study Centre Director a successful and impactful tenure and presented her and members of her delegation with a plaque of the Executive Chairman, Badagry Local Government, in appreciation and commemoration of the visit.
