The Director of the Bauchi Study Centre, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Dr. Habibu Tijjani, has urged newly admitted students to maximise the opportunities offered by the university’s Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system to achieve academic success.
Tijjani gave the advice while welcoming fresh students to the 2026 Orientation Programme organised by the study centre.
He explained that the orientation was designed to formally introduce the new students to the university’s academic system, noting that registration and matriculation were important stages in their academic journey.
The Centre Director described ODL as a flexible learning system that enables students to study at their own pace while balancing their education with personal and other commitments.
He noted that students could access course materials, lectures, videos and other academic resources at their convenience to enhance their understanding of their courses.
However, he cautioned that the flexibility of the system requires self-discipline, commitment and effective time management.
“Open University admission is very friendly. You do your studies at your time and at your own speed,” he said, urging the students to use their spare time judiciously for studying, revising course materials and accessing available academic resources.
Tijjani also encouraged the students to take their Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs) seriously, participate actively in academic activities and make effective use of the university’s support services.
He assured them of the study centre’s readiness to provide assistance whenever they encountered academic or administrative challenges.
He added that they could approach the Centre Director, academic staff and lecturers for guidance and support.
The Centre Director further urged the students to remain focused throughout their programmes, make their parents proud and uphold the good image of the university.
He challenged them to set ambitious academic goals and strive to complete their programmes within the stipulated period or earlier, where possible.
Tijjani commended the staff members who contributed to the successful organisation of the orientation programme and wished the newly admitted students success in their academic pursuits.
He urged them to remain committed, disciplined and proud members of the NOUN community.
