In line with the commitment of the Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Professor Uduma Oji Uduma, to strengthen student support services and provide a holistic learning experience, the university has established a Student Affairs Deanery.
The creation of the deanery marks a significant milestone in the university's drive towards a more student-centred administration and reflects its commitment to ensuring that learners receive comprehensive academic, social and personal support throughout their educational journey.
To provide strategic leadership for the new Deanery, the university has appointed Professor (Barr.) Ernest O. Ugbejeh, PhD, the immediate-past Dean of the Faculty of Law, as the pioneer Dean of Student Affairs.
Professor Ugbejeh brings to the position a wealth of academic, administrative and professional experience, which is expected to position the deanery to effectively coordinate student-focused initiatives across the university.
The Student Affairs Deanery is charged with several key responsibilities, including promoting the welfare and holistic development of students, coordinating student support services across the university's study centres, and facilitating student orientation, leadership development and engagement programmes.
Other responsibilities of the deanery include supervising student associations, clubs and extracurricular activities; providing guidance on student rights, responsibilities, discipline and grievance resolution; and strengthening communication and collaboration between students and the university management.
The deanery will also facilitate the establishment of student representatives and consultative forums and oversee their administration and operations.
In addition, it will coordinate and manage all matters relating to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and develop policies and programmes that foster an inclusive, safe and conducive learning environment.
Furthermore, the deanery will collaborate with relevant academic and administrative units to enhance the overall student experience and promote student success.
The establishment of the Student Affairs Deanery underscores NOUN's unwavering commitment to student success and aligns with the Vice-Chancellor's vision of building a learner-centred university where students are supported academically, socially, personally and professionally throughout their studies.
The deanery is expected to serve as the central hub for student engagement, advocacy and support, ensuring that every student has access to the services and opportunities necessary to thrive within and beyond the university.
